NEWFOUNDLAND 1929 SG181 Proof of Perkins Bacon re-engraved 3c red-brown x4

Stock Code: P223010144

1929 (10-31 May) group of four progressive die proofs for the 1929-31 Perkins Bacon re-engraved 3c red-brown "Queen Mary and King George V", individually struck on thick wove (91x68mm) with complete die sinking, and showing distinctly different stages of the engraving process, beginning with the frame only (with added shading), then the frame with portraits added (the portraits without shading), followed by the King's portrait fully shaded, and finally the completed die (prior to the addition of the die number in the surround). A beautiful quartet, exceedingly rare in this large format, and a wonderful demonstration of the engraver's skill. Walsh 154dp2/dp13 btwn.
