GB 1914 SGD1,D2 Postage Due - from a soldier on active service with the BEF

Stock Code: P189002766

1914 Postage Due. Interesting pair of PPC's from two soldiers in France with the British Expeditionary Force at the very beginning of WWI. Both cancelled with an Army Base Post Office cds one day apart, AU.22+23.1914 and both "Passed by Censor". On arrival the earlier card was charged "½d/F.B." and a ½d postage due applied, the second was charged "1d/F.B." and a 1d postage due was applied. From the 7th August 1914 when troops first entered France, letters and cards had to be prepaid with stamps at a 1d concessionary rate, due to supply difficulties many were sent unstamped and charged on arrival. It quickly became un-economic to collect all the postage due and from the 28th August all mail from soldiers on active service overseas was sent free. An unusual pair of cards with some obvious confusion over the correct postage rate.
