CEYLON 1886 SG143/a Cover

Stock Code: P212022394

1886 (NO 23) front of registered cover from Colombo to London, franked with 1882 (Oct) 20c on 64c red-brown, L-shaped block of five, the middle pair showing ERROR SURCHARGE DOUBLE, tied by three fine strikes of "A" barred oval, with "R in oval", large red "COLOMBO/REGISTERED" despatch cds and red "REGISTERED/LONDON" oval arrival ds (13 DE 86) alongside. The left hand error with trivial rub mentioned for accuracy, and the front with reinforced folds, nevertheless a unique and spectacular multiple usage of this very rare error, se-tenant with normals. Ex the famous Baron de Worms collection (Harmer 20 June 1938, lot 754), reappearing as lot 1113 in a Robson Lowe Postal History sale of 5 March 1976. With RPS cert (1972). [The 12x5 surcharge setting was applied twice to each 12x10 half-sheet. In this instance, the top row (1) of the setting intended for rows 6-10 was accidentally superimposed on row 5, creating the error. The double surcharges have been plated as R1/9-10 on top of R5/9-10, while the normal single above is R4/9 and the normal pair below is from R2/9-10.]
