On 17 June 2014, a notable stamp auction took place in New York City. The auction catalogue comprised only a single item- the British Guiana 1c Magenta, or SG 23. The realisation of $9,480,000 (including commission) shattered all previous record prices for postage stamps.
The buyer turned out to be Stuart Weitzman, a very successful shoe designer and businessman. He seemed to enjoy owning some of the world’s major philatelic rarities and the British Guiana stamp fits the description perfectly. This unique rarity is one of philately’s most precious crown jewels and most philatelists would like to see it in the flesh.
European collectors were provided such an opportunity in early December last year as the British Guiana 1c. Magenta was the start item at the MonacoPhil 2015 exhibition (3-5 December in Monaco).
