CEYLON 1882 SGT36var Telegraph

Stock Code: P212010693

Telegraphs. 1882-94 20c on 50c blue, type T31 surcharge (issue of 26 Sept 1890), rejoined horizontal pair, showing DOUBLE BARS through the original values (complete on the right stamp, partial on the left stamp), fresh large part o.g. Left stamp with gum crease at foot, still very fine appearance. An extraordinary and very rare pair, the likely explanation being that the printer noticed that the original values ("FIFTY CENTS") had not been satisfactorily obliterated by the first impression of the surcharge, and made an "ad hoc" decision to apply the bars again to the stamps affected. With a further very fine normal (bars correctly placed) for comparison. Ex "Taprobana" (SGA 6/10/2020, lots 137 part and 138).
