CEYLON 1863 SG49 Mint

Stock Code: P212012450

1863-66 1d deep blue, wmk CC (type 5), perf 12½, BLOCK OF EIGHT (4x2), printed from rows 2-3 of the plate (probably columns 4-7), with straight edge at top where row 1 was guillotined off, fresh large part o.g. to o.g. (two stamps unmounted). Odd short perfs and bends mentioned for accuracy, still a very fine and rare proving multiple of great technical interest, with the watermark (misplaced on the left block of six) showing the junction of rows 1-2 of the upper left and upper right 6x10 panes. Ex Burrus (RL 3/4/1963, lot 763) and Fleming (RL 14/2/1951, lot 342). [The sheets of wmk CC type 5 paper were too small for the Perkins Bacon 12x20 plates, hence the need to remove the top row and issue sheets of 228 (12x19).]
