CEYLON 1857 SG17 Mint

Stock Code: P212012595

1857-64 ½d dull mauve on white glazed paper, imperforate lower right CORNER BLOCK OF TWENTY (5x4) with full sheet margins (53mm at foot !) and portions of the adjacent column at left, unmounted o.g. with fine colour. Light crease affecting row 19, and odd minor marks, with characteristic surface "rippling" in margins (caused by hand application of gum), nevertheless a rare and spectacular positional multiple, in a remarkable state of preservation. Certainly the largest block we have been able to offer for many decades. [Baron de Worms had a lower right corner 5x6 block from a different sheet (Harmer 20/6/1938, lot 79, ex "Mayfair find") which realised £125 eighty-three years ago.]
