BRITISH EAST AFRICA 1897 SG88 Cover 2½ on 1a Zanzibar FIRST DAY OF ISSUE

Stock Code: P201002577

1897 (JA 2) cover to Guernsey, endorsed 'from / Lt Dugmore / Uganda' and correctly initialed at lower left, franked by 1897 '2½' on 1a indigo and red of Zanzibar, type 14 surcharge, tied by MOMBASA squared circle on FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. Backstamped at Guernsey (JA 26). Slight imperfections (creasing, minor opening faults) but a fascinating cover of great rarity. One of only three first day covers of the 'On Zanzibar issue recorded by Minns. [N.B. Prior to the construction of the Uganda Railway, mail from the interior to destinations beyond Mombasa was posted unpaid and stamped on arrival at Mombasa, provided the sender initialed the envelope (the cost being charged to account). The Uganda and 'Up-Country' mail of which this cover formed a part, reached Mombasa on 17 Dec 1896 during one of the stamp shortage periods. The 'On Zanzibar' provisional issue became available on 2 Jan 1897 and was used to frank mail bound for the monthly British India mailboat to Aden (S.S. 'Goa').]
