ZULULAND 1894 SG29(a) Used

Stock Code: P190009105

1894-96 £5 purple and black/red, BLOCK OF FOUR, showing the remarkable ERROR "BLACK (ZULULAND and £5) DOUBLY PRINTED" (the so-called "Thick duty plate"), fiscally used on fragment, each stamp with neat Ms date "23.2.97" and "JW" initials of John Windham (Registrar of Deeds). One short perf mentioned for accuracy, otherwise very fine. A spectacular and highly desirable item, which is believed to be the only surviving multiple of the error, from the one pane of 60 that existed. [The authenticity of examples with the "Thick duty plate" was recently called into question in articles by Clive Sergay & Peter Whitmore (see FFE 17, 2014, pp. 113-123, this block illustrated and discussed pp. 117-18), but the controversy has been resolved in an article by Philip Kinns (GSM Sept 2019). The error will now be listed as SG 29a in Part I 2020.]
