1898 (Jan) "2½" on 1a6p sepia, type 1 opt with surcharge types 3/4/5 in red, PANE OF SIXTY (6x10, with margin at foot showing part centre guide below R10/6, being the lower left quarter of a sheet), comprising an intact block of 58 and a vertical pair (R3-4/6, positions correct) inserted from another pane, fresh o.g. with most stamps unmounted. The surcharge setting shows types 3 (x26, at R1-2/1-6, R3/1, R4/6, R5/1-6, R6/1, 3-4, and R10/5-6), 4 (x10, at R3/2-6, R4/2-5 and R10/4) and 5 (x24, at R6/2, 5-6, R7-9/1-6 and R10/1-3) se-tenant, while the "Zanzibar" opt is from the final setting 4 (= Hall's setting "A") of Oct 1896, which has small second "z" on all but eight positions, being "normal" on R5/1 (surcharge type 3), R9/4 (type 5), R10/1-4 (type 5 on 1-3, type 4 on 10/4) and R10/6 (type 3), but "tall" on R9/2. [The most distinctive varieties in this setting are "Narrow capital Z" at R1/3 and "Daun's capital Z" at R5/3.] In remarkably fine condition (just minor reinforcements) and a fascinating and wonderful item of the highest importance and rarity, with comprehensive charts detailing both opt and surcharge settings. Considered to be the unique record multiple of this stamp, and one of only three known pieces with the complete "Zanzibar" overprint from this setting 4. Ex Sturton, Baumann (Harmer 22/9/1977, lot 651) and T.W.Hall.
