ZANZIBAR 1888 SGZ62 Cover
Stock Code: P201015052
1888 (AU 21) incoming cover to Zanzibar (town), almost certainly from mainland Zanzibar, and carried by private ship, franked on reverse by India 1882-90 ½a blue-green, tied on arrival by fine type Z5 squared circle (three bars at corners), with framed "SHIP LETTER / POSTAGE DUE ANS" applied on face, completed with red M/S "1" (indicating the fee payable to the ships's master). Also on reverse, fine strike of small "ZANZIBAR" delivery cds (as type Z6, but without "REG") of following day (AU 22), probably as proof of fee paid. Fine condition and a very rare usage, both as a single (local) ½a franking and showing this early Due handstamp. One of only three examples of the latter known to Griffith-Jones, listed, discussed and fully illustrated on pp. 117-20 of his 2014 book. Ex Minns. [N.B. It is now clear that the same handstamp was used on all three covers. Griffith-Jones claimed (incorrectly) that this cover was evidence of a second type.]
