SOUTH AFRICA 1947 SGO25var Official

Stock Code: P201002216

Official. 1930-47 "Set 21" (= Nov 1947 issue) 1s "deep violet-brown and grey-blue" roto, "SUID-AFRIKA" hyphenated, SG type O2 opt (19-20mm spacing), horizontal strip of six from the famous mystery sheet (with black Cyclometer number "1648") which was overprinted with a setting showing the first and last columns of type TRANSPOSED, leading to the errors "OFFICIAL OFFICIAL" on the first stamp and "OFFISIEEL OFFISIEEL" on the last stamp of each row. This strip from row 1 of the sheet with full margins, showing "arrow" and scratch flaw on R1/3, with stamp one Afrikaans and stamp six English, very fine large part o.g. to o.g. A spectacular and sought after rarity which seldom appears on the market, only 13 of the original 20 strips having been recorded, and of course these were divided equally between strips with stamp one Afrikaans (as here) or stamp one English, while rows 6 and 16 included the diaeresis varieties. UNIQUE in this positional form with "arrow", and highly desirable. Ex Matheson. [Union Handbook O107 V6. See SG Part I footnote after SG O30]
