SOUTH AFRICA 1946 SGO29 Official

Stock Code: P189017443

Official. 1946 (11 July) large piece from a registered OHMS airmail parcel wrapper, from Stamps Office, Pretoria to South Africa House, London (special blue and black printed address label, incorporating registration cachet, with various endorsements) with amazing franking comprising 1935-49 "Set 18" (= 1940 issue) 10s "Dull blue and sepia" (the lighter shade as defined by Hisey & Matheson p.101), SG type O3 opt with "OFFICIAL" at left, THIRTY-FOUR EXAMPLES (seven singles, and partly intact blocks of twelve (4x3) and fifteen (3x5)), SG type O3 opt with "OFFICIAL" at LEFT, and a "Set 19" (= 1941 issue) 2d grey and dull purple horizontal pair (SG type O4 opt. SG O30), cancelled / tied by mostly indistinct strikes of "PRETORIA / 99" cds. Faults too numerous to mention, with about half of the stamps defective, as might be expected with a commercial franking of this nature and magnitude (£17 0s 4d rate), nevertheless good to fine overall appearance, and a highly important exhibition item, undoubtedly unique, and the record usage of SG O29 ! For the serious enthusiast. Ex Matheson. [Union Handbook O90]
