Official. 1944-50 "Set 20A" (= 1944 issue) 1½d "yellow-buff and deep slate-green" ("SUID-AFRIKA" hyphenated, medium format), SG type O2 opt (14½mm spacing) WITH DIAERESES, the spectacular BLOCK OF THIRTY-NINE, being the three left columns of the half-sheet setting with R9-11/4 still attached towards lower right and full margins on three sides, unmounted o.g. Divided at the arrow between rows 6 and 7, lightly toned gum, and a few unobtrusive defects in the "extra" third and fourth columns, nevertheless overall fine appearance with the two left columns comprising twelve horizontal pairs in excellent condition, including the four key "se-tenant" pairs with one stamp lacking the diaeresis (at R1-3/2 and R8/1). The unique and phenomenal multiple whose discovery allowed a major advance in the understanding of this very rare setting ("forme IX", only used for this stamp, on left half-sheets). Unquestionably one of the most important pieces of the entire "Official" series. Ex Matheson, presented on his exhibition page with chart of varieties, and illustrated in Hisey & Matheson p.67. (cat £9600++ for columns one and two alone). [Union Handbook O99 with V1]
