SOUTH AFRICA 1934 SGO14, O18 Official

Stock Code: P189017473

Official. 1934 (16 Jan) large piece from a registered OHMS airmail parcel wrapper (with two Airmail labels and two strikes of violet registration cachet), from Cape Town to South Africa House, London, with spectacular franking comprising 1930-47 unhyphenated roto "Set 7" (= 1933 issue) 2d "greenish slate and bright mauve" (SG type O2 opt with 21mm space), block of 16 (4x4) and a single, and "Set 8" (= 1933 issue) 2s6d "green and red-brown" (SG type O2 opt with 18mm space) block of 16 (2x8) and three horizontal pairs, cancelled / tied by light strikes of "STAL ST / CAPE TOWN.KAAPSTAD" cds (fine strike at upper right). The 2d block (plated as R17-20/3-6) with some faults and separation, but the 2s6d block and pairs intact and fine to very fine. A very rare and remarkable item, demonstrating the inconvenience involved in paying high airmail rates before the issue of 5s and 10s values in 1940. In practice, even fine used single pairs of this 2s6d stamp are very difficult to find. Ex Matheson. [Union Handbook O28, O37]
