SOUTH AFRICA 1930 SGO25var Official

Stock Code: P189013212

Official. 1930-47 "Set 21" (= Nov 1947 issue) 1s "deep violet-brown and grey-blue" roto, "SUID-AFRIKA" hyphenated, SG type O2 opt (19-20mm spacing), horizontal strip of six from the famous mystery sheet (with black Cyclometer number "1648") which was overprinted with a setting showing the first and last columns of type TRANSPOSED, leading to the errors "OFFICIAL OFFICIAL" on the first stamp and "OFFISIEEL OFFISIEEL" on the last stamp of each row. This strip from row 15 of the sheet with side margins (showing diagnostic flaw "Dot below slash of "1/-" at left" on R15/1 and opt flaw "Broken O of OFFISIEEL" on R15/3), with stamp one Afrikaans and stamp six English, large part o.g. to o.g. Severed and rejoined between stamps 2 and 3, still very fine. A spectacular and sought after rarity which seldom appears on the market, only 13 of the original 20 strips having been recorded, and of course these were divided equally between strips with stamp one Afrikaans (as here) or stamp one English, while rows 6 and 16 included the diaeresis varieties. Ex Matheson. [Union Handbook O107 V6. See SG Part I footnote after SG O30]
