SIERRA LEONE 1915 Cover WWI Prisoner of War Mail

Stock Code: P189012574

1915 envelope from Lubben-Niederlausitz, Germany to Freetown, Sierra Leone, the German (enemy!) stamps removed in the UK, showing in their place "POST FREE/ P.C./ PRISONER OF WAR" hs, [Beale Type 2] applied in red in the UK, and a second strike in purple applied on arrival, endorsed "POW 3337" and "2941" (deleted) in blue ms, with two Freetown cds dated Jan 19 and Feb 22 on reverse. Addressed to "Walter Schulte,/ Passenger from the Steamer "Professor Woermann/ held in Freetown" whose vessel had been captured at Sea on 23 August 1914 by HMS Carnarvon and escorted to Sierra Leone, where the crew were interned at Fourah Bay College, Freetown. The captured vessel was renamed "Professor" and sailed under the British flag for the duration of the war. A fascinating and rare cover, with Beale stating that Sierra Leone has only a "small amount of surviving [P.O.W.] mail" from World War I.
