NIGER COAST 1898 SG67, 69 Cover Telegram envelope

Stock Code: P212012873

1898 (Sep) printed black/carmine 'TELEGRAM!' cover to 'The Superintendent, African Direct Telegraph Co. Ltd., Steamers first call at BRASS [deleted] or LAGOS', sent registered to Lagos, having been posted on board steamer at Forcados, franked by 1897-98 wmk CA 1d orange-vermilion pair and 2½d slate-blue, cancelled/tied on arrival by (Lagos) 8-bar oval, with Lagos arrival backstamp (SP 6 1898). A rare and stunning cover, which would enhance any 'Nigerias' collection, illustrated in Ince and Sacher, p. 167 fig. 88. [N.B. In the days before radio communication, and with the cable network incomplete, telegram messages were accepted at offices which did not actually have a cable link, for initial postal transmission to the nearest cable office. Forcados did not have a cable link, but was on the steamer route between Brass and Lagos, which did - hence the alternative destinations printed on this envelope, allowing for use of both eastbound and westbound ships.]
