NEW GUINEA 1915 SG52 Cover from Rabaul to Australia

Stock Code: P212010659

1915 (5 JAN) censored cover from Rabaul to Australia (addressed by Capt Walter Fry - in charge of the Treasury at Rabual, to his wife), franked at 4d by 1914 Marshall Islands 2d on 10pf carmine horizontal pair (setting II pos. 1-2), tied by individual strikes of 'STEPHANSORT / 13' pmk (used at Rabaul Nov 1914 to Jan 1915) in combination with violet 'RABAUL / NEW BRITAIN' double-lined oval and very rare thus. Endorsed 'Passed by Censor' in red M/S at upper left with initials and '3rd. Batt. N. and M. Forces, / Trop. Unit.' (Naval and Military Forces, Tropical Unit) violet H/S alongside. Slight cover faults (vertical filing fold, three small stains on face), still an exceptional commercial usage. [The oval Rabual cancel was introduced on 4 January, making this a second day usage. The cover further represents a transition from the (fixed date) Stephansort cds to a more conventional postmark, and is highly important thus.]
