JAMAICA 1921 SG90s var Specimen Abolition of Slavery 6d watermark MCA with abnormal type D9 overprint

Stock Code: P212012913

1921 'Abolition of Slavery' 6d red and blue-green, wmk MCA, opt 'SPECIMEN' for UPU distribution but exceptionally with abnormal type D9 instead of the usual type D12x, unused. Mentioned (and illustrated - plate 8) in Samuel (p. 135) where he states, 'This may possibly have been a De La Rue reference specimen but it is considered more probable that it was one of those supplied to the U.P.U. to make up the exact numbers required for distribution.'. Fractionally toned, still a fine and extraordinary item which is possibly unique (no further examples having to come to light since the publication of Samuel in 1976). [N.B. Only two stamps - Jamaica 1919 1½d green (SG 80) and Tonga 1920 2d agate and aniline violet (SG 57) - received general distribution overprinted with type D9.]
