IONIAN ISLANDS 1859 SG1/3 Specimen set with Perkins Bacon CANCELLED handstamp

Stock Code: P190010822

1859 (15 June) (½d) orange, (1d) blue and (2d) carmine, each with mostly large margins and lovely fresh colours, showing crisply struck part strike(s) of the Perkins Bacon "CANCELLED" handstamp, being respectively pos. 4, 2 and 3 from the original vertical blocks of six (2x3) prepared for presentation to Ormond Hill (nephew of Rowland Hill) in August 1861. Only three examples of each value have ever been recorded (although Peter Jaffe knew of only two each of the ½d and 1d in 1998), including the set in the Royal Philatelic Collection. A wonderful and beautiful set of the highest importance and rarity, the (1d) blue exceptionally still with part o.g. Ex Yates (Robson Lowe 31 Oct 1951) and Gordon Torrey (Corinphila 19 June 1997, lot 9286), with Holcombe (1997) and BPA (1998) certs. [The fascinating story of these stamps is told in Peter Jaffe's 1998 book "CANCELLED by Perkins Bacon". It may be noted that the other possible set of three has not yet been assembled, but the single 2d carmine (pos. 5 from the original block, ex Latto, Jaffe and Pitts collections) realised £11,400 at auction in July 2017, despite having a small thin.]
