Telegraphs. I900 (Feb 6) composite artist's essay for the new 2r value with von Angeli portrait, being a stamp-size die proof in black on glazed card of the 1890 "Single head" 2r8a (SG T47), which has been variously modified. 1) The original "2 RUPEES. 8 ANNAS" value tablets at top and bottom have been overpainted "2 RUPEES" in black and Chinese white. 2) The side panels (previously inscribed "TELEGRAPHS. TWO RUPEES" [at left] and "EIGHT ANNAS. TELEGRAPHS" [at right]) have similarly been replaced with "TELEGRAPHS" [at left] and "TWO RUPEES" [at right]. 3). The original QV profile portrait has been covered by a cut-down die proof of the von Angeli bust (taken from the vignette used for the 1895 2r, 3r, 5r postage high values - SG 107/9), modified by the extension of hand-drawn background lines at left and right, to fit the circular space. A fascinating essay of great importance and interest, one of two preserved in the De La Rue archives (the other mounted on dated card but otherwise identical).
