I.F.S. JAMMU&KASHMIR 1874 SG17 Mint ½a "bright blue" circular, special printing, watercolour on native paper

Stock Code: P223009788

1874-76 ½a "bright blue" circular, special printing in watercolour on native paper, a deep shade, cut square with clear to good margins, unused. Faint trace of toning at NW corner (clear of impression), still a fine and intriguing stamp of considerable rarity. Ex Sturton, with successive clear RPS certs (1980 and 2004), the former wrongly dating it "1866-67" and describing it oddly as "Royal blue, Special printing" (without any SG number), the latter as "SG 17var. ½a Bright Blue (Deep Royal Blue shade) - Special printing", which is more accurate and comprehensible. [In our experience, SG 17 shows more variation in shade than the corresponding 1a and 4a circulars in bright blue, SG 18/19. This particular stamp is wholly unrelated to the very rare 1866 1a and 4a royal blue (SG 3 and 5), which can only be conclusively identified when in used condition.]
