GRIQUALAND 1878 SG14a Mint ½d grey-black overprint inverted

Stock Code: P190017317

1878 (June) ½d grey-black, complete lower right pane of 60 (6x10) with wing margin at left, printer's guide cross and current number '43' in bottom margin below R10/1 and R10/5 respectively, INVERTED 'G' opts in red, o.g. (stamps unmounted). Being inverted, the setting is that intended for left panes, when upright, showing opt type 15 throughout, whereas the other pane shows type 15 at R1/6, 4/5 and 6-10/6, the remainder being type 16. Odd minor tones, with light horizontal creasing affecting three rows and one stamp with small closed tear, but exceptionally fresh, and overall in a remarkable state of preservation for such a multiple. A fascinating item of considerable rarity, only the second intact Griqualand pane we have been able to offer in over 30 years. (cat £1740++). [N.B. The complete two-pane setting of 120 was usually applied upright to the upper panes, but INVERTED to the lower panes, on a 'print and turn' basis.]
