GB 1965 SG579 Cover - Iberia Super constellation EC-AIN crash cover

1965 Crash and wreck mail. Very rare cover showing significant damage by fire, recovered from the wreck of the Iberia Super Constellation EC-AIN which crashed at Los Rodeo Airport, Santa Cruz, Tenerife on MY.5.1965. Cover prepaid by a 6d Deep claret tied by a London W.C. machine cancel for MY.4.1965 with a violet crash cachet at left 'RECUPERADA DE/AVIÓN SINIESTRADO'. Tenerife arrival stamp on reverse for the 7th. The initial landing was aborted due to poor visibility and whilst starting its go-around, the aircraft struck a scraper and tractor located 50 m from the runway edge, with one leg of the undercarriage and the lower aft part of the fuselage. It left various debris scattered about and finally crashed on the western edge of the diversion canal of the Rodeo gorge. From there, it slid about 100 m across private farmland and finally burst into flames. Six crew and 24 passengers unfortunately lost their lives, with further 19 crew and passengers injured but surviving the accident. The vast majority of the mails were totally destroyed.
