GB 1942 SG467b/478b Used Ministry of Aircraft Production

Stock Code: P201001464

c.1942 WWII Ministry of Aircraft Production Official Mail. Two very fine pieces each bearing multiple "Arms" High values one with additional definitives (one for 18s9d and another at £8,0s,0d). During the war Rolls Royce sent their correspondence to USA by air in the official bag of the Ministry of Aircraft Production. This ensured speed, certainty of destruction if encountered by the enemy and avoidance of censorship. Some packets were very large and at a rate of 1s3d per oz several required over £20 postage. At first they were sent without adhesives but the P.O. Authorities complained that this was defrauding the revenue so the correct stamps were affixed at Derby then sent to London and cancelled by violet "M.A.P./ BY BAG" handstamps, enclosed in the diplomatic bag and sent by air to the British Purchasing Commission, Washington D.C. It is believed a consignment of these labels were returned to Derby as a favour to the original sender who distributed these scarce pieces between his associates. So far as is known this method of transit was in the nature of a favour on the part of the M.A.P. extended only to Rolls Royce, and to no other firm in the country mostly in part due to the integral part the company played in the supply of goods to the allied forces during WWII. Two wonderful exhibition pieces.
