1886 Naval Officers' Mail. Very fine cover from Lt. Charles E. Monro, R.N. serving aboard HMS 'Sylvia' a four gun wooden screw sloop at Teneriffe, Canary Islands. Addressed to Winchfield, Hants and prepaid by a 2½d lilac tied by a Liverpool '466' numeral with a PAID/LIVERPOOL/BR PACKET cds at lower left for AP.25.1886 and a Winchfield arrival cds on reverse for the 27th. Complete with original contents the letter was carried from Santa Cruz to Liverpool by the British and African Steam Navigation Co. steamer 'Gaboon'. Ex Geoffrey Osbourn and illustrated on the front cover of his book 'Naval Officers' Letters'.
