Stock Code: P178011658

1880 Overseas mail. Very fine cover from Wateringbury to Kotta Rajah (Banda Aceh), Acheen (Aceh), Sumatra bearing a 6d Grey Pl.16 (SG147) tied by crisp Maidstone "493" duplex for FE.13.1880 (Overpaid by 1d as the rate had recently been reduced to 5d per ½oz on the 1st).
Endorsed "Via Brindisi and Penang" and carried by P & O steamers "Ceylon" Brindisi-Alexandria, "Pekin" Suez-Galle & "Gwalior" Galle-Penang and possibly as far as Singapore. A Weltvreden (Port area of Jakarta) cds on the reverse for MR.16.1880 indicates the letter was transferred to the Dutch post office and routed via Java thence to Sumatra.
Although Aceh was considered part of the Nederland Indies, at this point in time the Dutch had been at war with the Acehnese for nearly 10 years and held only the town of Banda Aceh and the harbour district of Ulee Lheue, and although the conflict was declared by the Dutch over in late 1880, hostilities soon resumed and continued until 1903. British mail to Sumatra is extremely rare especially during this turbulent period of Sumatran history.
