1840 1d Mulready Envelope Forme 4, Stereo A178. Very fineused example sent from Maidstone to Sevenoaks on the 10th May (First Sunday) neatly cancelled by a red MC with a Maidstone cds at lower left. The writer has added a man at lower left satirising the design and proclaiming "Lord ha' mercy, has the Queen got so many children already". Beneath Britannia he has also penned the rhyme " Britannia's fame is taking its flights, and her lion is dying for very spite, while heronce proud navy is dwindled away, to the size of yonder Laplander's sleigh". A magnificent exhibition piece illustrating the widespread derision of the Mulready design and a very rare 1st Sunday usage. Ex. Compton Collection.
