1839 1d Chalmers Treasury Essay (Type 3, Bates J). Superb essay printed in red on thin white wove watermark "H" paper on complete envelope and cancelled by a Dundee datestamp for "Oct. 7. 39.". Endorsed in manuscript at right with the Treasury number "22799/39". An extremely attractive and rare Treasury competition essay, proposed by James Chalmers of Dundee as "slips" to seal letter sheets.
