GB 1834 Pre-Stamp - Worthing S1 Ship Letter

Stock Code: P223015339

1834 Maritime Mail. Superb cover to London, landed at Worthing where a black 'WORTHING/SHIP LETTER' handstamp (Robertson type S1) was applied. Rated '1/4' (8d Ship plus 8d inland postage) in manuscript on front with a red London receiving office cds on reverse for JU.6.1834. Ex Alan Robertson who according to him was the finest of the four examples recorded at that time (other inferior examples have been subsequently found), he also stated that the origin was Lisbon, whether he had worked this out from shipping schedules or at one time he had the contents is unknown. Worthing was an obscure fishing village at the end of the 18th Century without haven or harbour and it is surprising that a Ship Letter handstamp was issued to such a place, but it 'rose to a place of prosperity and celebrity' as a result of patronage by George III whose sickly daughter Amelia recuperated there in 1798. Exhibition quality.
