GB 1819 Revenue - Post Horse duty mileage ticket pair.

Stock Code: P201014000

1819 Revenue - Post Horse Duty. Mileage ticket for 2 Miles, Type 54-A(a)ii, watermarked ‘STAMP/ OFFICE’ overprinted ‘Dist 3,5’ limiting usage to Districts 3 (Yorkshire), or 5 (Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire), very fine unused horizontal pair comprising impressions 161 and 162 from plate 9, the 18/2/1819 re-engraving noted by strikethrough and half brackets through position numbers. Insignificant creasing and trivial traces of toning, still an attractive and very rare multiple of the issued stamp, and a wonderful piece of social history. [N.B. Post Horse Duty was a tax on travelers, who could hire a horse to travel between towns, in convoy with Postal messengers for safety against robbery, and to provide mutual assistance in case of mishaps on treacherous roads] Booth 2-21.
