GB 1814 Pre-Stamp Napoleonic campaign letter

Stock Code: P223014909

1814 Napoleonic campaign letter. Very fine entire written by Capt. James Michell R.A. from Villefranque dated internally 13th January 1814. Rated at '2/2' in manuscript with a fine strike of the boxed scarce 'PACKET LETTER/PLYM:DOCK' handstamp in red. The packet service normally ran via Falmouth but occasionally other ports were used almost certainly due to storms forcing the ships further up the English Channel before they could find safe harbour.
An interesting letter that refers to Rowland Hill (the General not the Postal Reformer) and Lord Wellington, Capt. Michell also refers to the extremely bad weather that left roads impassable and the artillery sunk in mud up to their axels. The weather at this period following the battle of Nive (12-13th Dec. 1813) was so bad it left the allied army entrenched until mid February.
