GB 1811 Pre-Stamp Napoleonic campaign letter

1811 (May 12) Napoleonic Campaign Mail. Very fine entire from Lieutenant Edward Thomas Mitchell at Tarifa, Southern Spain to his sister Eliza at Huish, Somerset, re-directed to Gloucester upon arrival. Rated originally at ‘8’ as a ship letter, then cancelled and uprated to 1/4 upon arrival at Huish, then again on reverse after re-direction at ‘3/2’. Sent from Tarifa via Gibraltar with a very fine black straight-line ‘Somerton’ handstamp. Lieutenant Mitchell of the Royal Artillery was detached from his company at Gibraltar to Spain in 1810 and commanded a guerrilla division in the Sierra de Ronda. He was present at many of the major actions in the Peninsula war, and in the Anglo-American was (1814-15). Mitchell died during the Syria campaign in 1841. Mitchell was shot through the shoulder the previous March (5th) at the Battle of Barrosa and was recuperating at Tarifa, in the letter he describes in detail the progress of the expeditionary force under General Campbell, with an account of the terrain from a military perspective, the defence of the town against 600 French and the use of artillery under Mitchell etc. A very rare personnel accounted one of the less well known campaigns in the Peninsula.
