GB 1811 Pre-Stamp Napoleonic campaign letter

Stock Code: P223015126

1811 (May 4) Napoleonic Campaign Mail. Very fine entire from Lieutenant Edward Thomas Mitchell at Tarifa, Southern Spain to his father the Revd. J Mitchell at Huish, Somerset, re-directed to Gloucester upon arrival. Rated originally at ‘2/3’ then again after re-direction at ‘3/2’. Sent from Tarifa via Gibraltar with a very fine ‘Gibraltar’ first type arc handstamp in red and a black straight-line ‘Somerton’ handstamp at lower left. Lieutenant Mitchell of the Royal Artillery was detached from his company at Gibraltar to Spain in 1810 and commanded a guerrilla division in the Sierra de Ronda. He was present at many of the major actions in the Peninsula war, and in the Anglo-American was (1814-15). Mitchell died during the Syria campaign in 1841. Mitchell was shot through the shoulder the previous March (5th) at the Battle of Barrosa, in the letter he states that the ‘wound is entirely healed’ allowing him ‘to return to his sports and exercises’ and that he has hopes for promotion. A very fine quality and poignant personal letter from an Officer serving in the Peninsula war.
