GB 1808 Cover Napoleonic campaign letter

Stock Code: P223014911

1808 Napoleonic mail. Very fine entire written from Oporto (8th Sept. 1808) addressed to Edinburgh bearing a fine strike of the oval 'SHIP LETTER/DOVER' handstamp (Robertson S8) and rated at '1/5'. Written by a British Army Officer James Anderson the letter contains a fine account of the battle of Vimiero "The French commenced a general attack upon our line, but all obstacles were surmounted by a happy mixture of conduct and valour, on the part of the British, to the complete overthrow of the vain French who lost all their cannon in the space of a few hours." it also refers to the unpopularity of the terms for the capitulation of the French army. After the battle Marshall Junot asked for a capitulation on the terms that he and his army be repatriated to France. The 2 officers who had superceded Wellesley agreed to the terms and the French Army was transported by the British Fleet to France complete with the loot it had taken from Portugal. There was outrage in Britain and the 3 senior officers involved, Dalrymple, Burrard and Wellesley were subjected to an enquiry, although Wellesley had been ordered to sign the treaty the whole affair very nearly cost him his career, he was however fully exonerated. A very fine and rare letter from the very beginning of the Penninsula campaign.
