1794 Provincial Mail. Very fine entire from Stockport to London rated '6' pence and showing a very fine strike of the Stockport horseshoe handstamp (CH742) in claret-red. London arrival datestamp on reverse for AP.4.1794 and endorsed 'Wills' which refers to a redirection to the Wills Coffee house. Peter Boardman, the Stockport postmaster disliked the official stamps issued to him so had his own manufactured in a series of scrolls, crescents, horseshoes and circles often stuck in distinctive red and purple inks. Lovely quality and an interesting letter from a sister to her brother informing him of the elopement of a family member to Manchester.
