GB 1786-1800 Revenue 1d Red Hair Powder Tax

Stock Code: P190010925

1786-1800 1d Red Hair Powder Tax. Very fine example for Powder priced at or below 2s per lb, Die 126, 'unused' from the second recut of plate H-P 3, dividing lines visible on two sides within four good to large margins. Insignificant corner creasing, still very fine for this delicate and exceptionally rare revenue, free of the oxidisation which so often plagues the colour of these stamps. Booth 1. [From 1786-1800, Hair Powder was one of a multitude of commodities taxed by William Pitt the Younger to avoid national bankruptcy following the American War of Independence. The extortionate charged led to a change in fashion; the tax was abolished in 1800 as less than 1,000 citizens were still using Hair Powder.]
