1891 (JY 11) registered cover from Stanley to London, addressed to the eminent philatelist Anthony de Worms, franked by no less than SIX UNSEVERED PAIRS of the 1891 (11 July) ½d on half of 1d red-brown, comprising a vertical strip of four with imperf sheet margin at foot and a vertical pair with imperf sheet margin at top, tied by individual good to fine strikes of type 1/78 "F.I." steel obliterator, with very fine type F2 despatch cds and "Crown / REGISTERED" H/S below, and red London arrival cds (11 AUG) at lower right. Carried on the Kosmos steamer "Herodot" as part of the ninth bisect mail. An outstanding cover of great visual appeal and rarity, being the largest recorded franking of the ½d surcharge in the Barton census (Barton I5). Ex Perkin (Harmers 7 Mar 1949, lot 36) and Stone (Philips 26 Apr 2001, lot 557).
