CAYMAN ISLANDS 1907 SG18 var Cover from Georgetown to Birmingham with ½d on 5s pair, one with slotted frame variety

Stock Code: P223014413

1907 (NO 25) part registered O.H.M.S. cover (right half), addressed to (W.T.) Wilson in Birmingham, in the distinctive hand of the postmistress Miss Gwendolyn Parsons, with 1907 ½d on 5s salmon and green horizontal pair, tied by type 4 Georgetown cds, with Birmingham arrival backstamp of "19 DE 07". Trivial blemishes, but a most important and desirable item, being the earliest known usage of this provisional (quoted as "26 Nov" in Part I), while the right stamp shows the "Slotted frame" variety from R1/4, left pane. It is a reasonable inference that this pair represents the third and fourth stamps from the first sheet to be issued. Only 1800 surcharged (= 15 sheets), making the "Slotted frame" one of just 15 possible (and of equal rarity to the more well-known "Dented frame" variety). Ex Cooley (Shreves 23 Sep 1995, lot 64) and Marston (CRL 4 Mar 1992, lot 2107), formerly with clear BPA certs of 1962 and 1995 (neither of which is now present).
