REVENUE: 1883 (May 1) 'Appendix E' sheet (198 x 328mm) bearing 17 perforated colour trials, on unwatermarked paper, denominated '½d'. Endorsed in Header "Examples showing the colours of the shilling series of the Cape of Good Hope Revenue Stamps", with each trial endorsed with a value from 1s to 15s. Produced for the 1883 "Report Upon the Adhesive Stamps Used at the Cape of Good Hope" This colour scheme was adopted for the 1s, 2s, 2s6d, 5s, 7s6d, 8s, 10s and 12s, values whilst the 1s6d, 3s, 4s, 4s6d, 6s, 7s, 9s, 12s6d and 15s values were never issued, as supplies of the 1878 set issued five years earlier were deemed sufficient. A remarkable and spectacular archival record in a wonderful state of preservation.
