CANADA 1870 SG57d Cover at the TRANSIENT NEWSPAPER rate with 2c Large Queen

Stock Code: P201006526

1870 (JAN 28) cover from St John, New Brunswick, to New Hampshire, USA, the envelope opened at either end to act as a wrapper and franked at the TRANSIENT NEWSPAPER rate by 1868-90 2c bluish green 'Large Queen', tied by '7' two ring target numeral (which leaves profile clear) with very fine blue 'T. RANKINE & SONS / ST. JOHN. N.B. / BISCUIT MANUFACTURERS' oval ds below. The adhesive with a few short perfs, still very fine for this great rarity. A most remarkable survival, this being one of just TWO examples of the transient newspaper rate to the USA recorded in the Wayne Smith census. [N.B. Unlike the normal newspaper rate, which covered newspapers and periodicals mailed directly from the publisher to subscribers, the transient newspaper rate covered newspapers and periodicals mailed by a private individual to another.]
