CANADA 1869 SG51 Cover from Castorville to England underpaid at 12½c

Stock Code: P201007994

1869 (MR 25) cover from Caistorville to England, franked by 1868-90 'Large Queen' 12½c bright blue, tied by postmaster's private advertising cancel in blue ('M.G. SCOTT / DEALER / IN DRY GOODS / GROCERIES &tc / CAISTORVILLE, C.W.'), with matching despatch cds at lower left. Although correctly prepaid at the Canadian Packet rate, the cover missed the intended Allan Line sailing and was forwarded to New York to catch the first British Packet sailing (under the first packet principle), which resulted in an underpayment of 2½c, the British Packet rate being 15c. The face with 'MORE / TO / PAY' circular h/s and '1' (1d = 2½c) due markings on face, and backstamped at Burton and Kirkby Lonsdale (AP 13). Minor creasing, still a fine and interesting cover.
