No Longer Available - CANADA 1868 SG51 Cover to Edinburgh with 12½c Large Queen Inman Line

Stock Code: P201007964

1868 (Nov) cover to Scotland, franked by 1868-90 'Large Queen' 12½c bright blue, thin paper, tied by oval grid cancel. Backstamped at Halifax (NO 5) and Edinburgh (NO 22). Although correctly franked at the Canadian Packet rate of 12½c, the cover missed the intended Allan Line sailing from Quebec and was forwarded (under the first packet principle) to Halifax for onward transmission aboard a British Packet, the face with confirmatory red 'PAID / LIVERPOOL / BR.PACKET' cds, dated '21 NO 68'. The cover should thus have been taxed upon arrival in Liverpool, as the British Packet rate was 15c. Minor soiling, but a rare and interesting survival. [N.B. The Inman Line had been awarded a contract to carry mails at the beginning of 1868, after the Cunard Line stopped calling at Halifax at the end of 1867. This cover was carried aboard the 'City of Cork'.]
