CANADA 1855 SG7, 14 Cover from Perth to Scotland at the US Packet rate of 16d

Stock Code: P201008775

1855 (DEC 4) cover from Perth to Scotland, endorsed 'Paid' and franked at the US Packet rate of 16d by 1852-57 3d scarlet-vermilion 'Beaver' vertical pair and 10d dull blue 'Cartier', tied by very fine 'PERTH / U.C.' cds (3d pair), '29' target numeral (10d) and Liverpool 'tombstone' entry ds (23 DE), with 'CONVEYED BY / UNITED STATES / PACKET' h/s at left. Carried aboard the Collins Line steamer 'Atlantic', and backstamped at Brockville (?), Montreal and Sanquhar. Slight faults (traces of soiling, flap missing) nevertheless an appealing example of this very rare rate. Only THREE such frankings (out of a total of eleven US Packet rate covers) recorded in the exhaustive Wayne Smith census of Pence issue covers. Ex Nickle (Christies NY, 19 Mar 1993, lot 135), Richardson, and Wilkinson. [N.B. During 1855 many of the Cunard Line ships were pulled from trans-Atlantic duty by the British Government in order to carry troops to the battlefields in the Crimea, resulting a much reduced fortnightly service. Nevertheless, the prohibitive cost of the US Packet service ensured that it remained little used, with most mail in this period being directed via the much cheaper Canadian Packet (Allan Line) service.]
