BURMA 1866 SG. Cover from Akyab to Bordeaux franked at 12a8p

Stock Code: P212016864

1866 (JA 17) outer wrapper (with jellygraphed market report) from Akyab to Bordeaux, endorsed "Via france", franked at 12a8p by India 1856-64 8a rose, 1860 8p purple and 1865 4a green, tied by fine large part "AKYAB/5" duplex, and fine "Paul Auschitzky & Co. / AKYAB" sender's chop (in blue), with small framed "PD" and Marseille entry cds (15 FEVR 66), both in red, alongside. Backstamps of Calcutta (20 JA, in red) and Bordeaux x2 (19 Fevr). Minor wrapper faults (light filing folds), nevertheless a neat, attractive and interesting three-colour franking, rare with this combination of values, and the 4a green with clear profile. [The rate to France increased from 9a4p to 10a8p on 7/1/1866. The apparent overpayment by 2a may reflect uncertainty about this change. Also, the year in the Akyab duplex is "65", in error for "66", further suggesting that the Postmaster was under pressure.]
