Stock Code: P212021872

1856 Typeset 4c black/magenta, a spectacular cut-square example with huge to enormous margins, sharp impression, sumptuous colour and near perfect surface, "CAW" initials of C.A.Watson, neatly cancelled by central "A 1 C" cds of Aurora and showing parts of (Demer)ara cds and another British cds, respectively at NW and SE corners. Pos. 1 from the vertical setting of four, as defined by Townsend. Unimportant tear and thin in wide right margin (far from the printed area), still superb for this issue, with few comparable examples extant, and certainly the finest we have handled in nearly 40 years. A classic rarity with the most desirable pedigree, being ex Ferrary (sale 1, 23 June 1921, lot 51 - "Superbe"), and subsequently ex Dupont (Feldman 27 June 2014, lot 60075 - realised EUR 40,000+), with BPA cert (2014).
