Fractional share of 1856 1c black/magenta, type 6 typeset provisional, the UNIQUE example of the celebrated 'ONE CENT MAGENTA' which has attained near-mythical status since its discovery in 1873 by local schoolboy L. Vernon Vaughan. Initialed 'E.D.W.' prior to use by postal clerk E.D. Wight (as a safeguard against forgery) and lightly cancelled by virtually complete Demerara cds, dated 'AP 4 1856'. Generally accepted throughout the philatelic world as 'The World's Rarest Stamp', it has graced the collections of, amongst others, Philipp la Renotiere von Ferrary, Arthur Hind, Frederick Small, John E. du Pont, and Stuart Weitzman.
