Stock Code: P190007411

c.1937 group of four hand painted stamp-sized preliminary essays by Waterlow staff artist L. P. Fryer, produced in advance of the 1938 definitive issue, each with highlights in Chinese white, differing form the issued designs only in portrait; on these essays the king is facing to his right. The "English Harbour" ½d. green and "Nelson's Dockyard" 2½d. blue match the issued design and colour, however the "Fort James" design is denominated 2d. and executed in brown and teal, and the "St Johhn's Harbour" design is denominated 5s and executed in black and brown (the colours of the issued 1s). A wonderful group from a late stage in the design process which comprises all of the adopted designs for the set. Unique!
