Poland has been awarded the St Gabriel Award for Best Religious Stamp 2015. The award was given for the souvenir sheet celebrating the canonisation of Pope John Paul II, which was available from 2 April as a joint issue with the Vatican. Poland has now won the award three times in recent years. In 2010 it won for the commemorative stamp issued in memory of Father Jerzy Popieluszko on the 25th anniversary of his death, and in 2012 it won for a souvenir sheet honouring the beatification of Pope John Paul II—another joint issue with Vatican City. Both the 2012 and 2015 winning stamp issues were designed by Marzanna Dabrowska, working with her husband, Jacek. A major element of the design of the 5z. stamp in this souvenir sheet is the aureole of St John Paul II, which comprises seven rings with historic quotes from the Pope.
During the awards ceremony, Agnieszka Kloda-Debska, head of the philatelic and marketing agency for Poczta Polska (Poland’s Post Office), revealed that the aureole on the souvenir sheet from Poland includes 35 quotes, while there are only 34 quotes on its counterpart from Vatican City. Because Polish is a more concise language than Italian, extra space was available for an additional quote. The award ceremony took place on 29 September at the Fioroni Museum, Legnago, Italy.
